Elihu Rebukes Job in Anger

32 Then these three men stopped answering Job, because he was ^(A)righteous in his own eyes. ²But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the ^(B)Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned against Job; his anger burned ^(C)because he justified himself ^[a]^(D)before God. ³And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, yet they had condemned Job. ⁴Now Elihu had waited ^[b]to speak to Job because they were years older than he. ⁵But when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men, his anger burned.

⁶So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite ^[c]spoke out and said,

“I am young in years and you are ^(E)old;
Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you ^[d]what I think.
⁷I ^[e]thought ^[f]^(F)age should speak,
And ^[g]increased years should teach wisdom.
⁸But it is a spirit that is in mankind,
And the ^(G)breath of the Almighty gives them ^(H)understanding.
⁹The ^[h]abundant in years may not be wise,
Nor may ^(I)elders understand justice.
¹⁰So I ^[i]say, ‘Listen to me,
I too will tell ^[j]what I think.’

¹¹“Behold, I waited for your words,
I listened to your skillful speech,
While you ^[k]pondered what to say.
¹²I also paid close attention to you;
But ^[l]indeed, there was no one who refuted Job,
Not one of you who answered his words.
¹³So do not say,
‘^(J)We have found wisdom:
God will ^[m]defeat him, not man.’
¹⁴But he has not presented his words against me,
Nor will I reply to him with your ^[n]arguments.

¹⁵“They are dismayed, they no longer answer;
Words have ^[o]failed them.
¹⁶Should I wait, because they are not speaking,
Because they have ^[p]stopped and no longer answer?
¹⁷I too will ^[q]give my share of answers;
I also will tell my opinion.
¹⁸For I am full of words;
The spirit within me compels me.
¹⁹Behold, my belly is like unvented wine;
Like new wineskins, it is about to burst.
²⁰Let me speak so that I may get relief;
Let me open my lips and answer.
²¹Let me ^(K)be partial to no one,
Nor flatter any man.
²²For I do not know how to flatter,
Otherwise my Maker would quickly take me away.

Purpose of This Letter

3 ^(A)Beloved, this is now the second letter I am writing to you in which I am ^(B)stirring up your sincere mind by way of a reminder, ²to ^(C)remember the words spoken beforehand by ^(D)the holy prophets and ^(E)the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.

The Coming Day of the Lord

³^(F)Know this first of all, that ^(G)in the last days ^(H)mockers will come with their mocking, ^(I)following after their own lusts, ⁴and saying, “^(J)Where is the promise of His ^(K)coming? For ever since the fathers ^[a]^(L)fell asleep, all things continue just as they were ^(M)from the beginning of creation.” ⁵For ^[b]when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that ^(N)by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was ^(O)formed out of water and by water, ⁶through which ^(P)the world at that time was ^(Q)destroyed by being flooded with water. ⁷But by His word ^(R)the present heavens and earth are being reserved for ^(S)fire, kept for ^(T)the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.

⁸But do not let this one fact escape your notice, ^(U)beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and ^(V)a thousand years like one day. ⁹^(W)The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but ^(X)is patient toward you, ^(Y)not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

A New Heaven and Earth

¹⁰But ^(Z)the day of the Lord ^(AA)will come like a thief, in which ^(AB)the heavens ^(AC)will pass away with a roar and the ^(AD)elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and ^(AE)the earth and ^[c]its works will be ^[d]discovered.

¹¹Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, ¹²^(AF)looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which ^(AG)the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the ^(AH)elements will melt with intense heat! ¹³But according to His ^(AI)promise we are looking for ^(AJ)new heavens and a new earth, ^(AK)in which righteousness dwells.

¹⁴^(AL)Therefore, ^(AM)beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be ^(AN)found ^(AO)spotless and blameless by Him, at peace, ¹⁵and regard the ^(AP)patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also ^(AQ)our beloved brother Paul, ^(AR)according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, ¹⁶as also in all his letters, speaking in them of ^(AS)these things, ^(AT)in which there are some things that are hard to understand, which the untaught and ^(AU)unstable distort, as they do also ^(AV)the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. ¹⁷You therefore, ^(AW)beloved, knowing this beforehand, ^(AX)be on your guard so that you are not carried away by ^(AY)the error of ^[e]^(AZ)unscrupulous people and ^(BA)lose your own ^[f]firm commitment, ¹⁸but grow in the grace and ^(BB)knowledge of our ^(BC)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. ^(BD)To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Elihu Claims to Speak for God

33 “However, please ^(A)hear my speech, Job,
And listen to all my words.
²Behold now, I open my mouth,
My tongue in my ^[a]mouth speaks.
³My words are from the integrity of my heart,
And my lips speak ^(B)knowledge sincerely.
⁴The ^(C)Spirit of God has made me,
And the ^(D)breath of ^[b]the Almighty gives me life.
⁵^(E)Refute me if you can;
Line up against me, take your stand.
⁶Behold, I belong to God, like you;
I too have been ^[c]formed out of the ^(F)clay.
⁷Behold, ^(G)no fear of me should terrify you,
Nor should my pressure weigh heavily on you.

⁸“You have in fact spoken ^[d]while I listened,
And I heard the sound of your words:
⁹‘I am ^(H)pure, ^(I)without wrongdoing;
I am innocent and there ^(J)is no guilt in me.
¹⁰Behold, He ^[e]invents ^[f]criticisms against me;
He ^(K)counts me as His enemy.
¹¹He ^(L)puts my feet in the stocks;
He watches all my paths.’
¹²Behold, let me respond to you, ^(M)you are not right in this,
For God is greater than mankind.

¹³“Why do you ^(N)complain to Him
That He does not give an account of all His doings?
¹⁴Indeed ^(O)God speaks once,
Or twice, yet no one notices it.
¹⁵In a ^(P)dream, a vision of the night,
When deep sleep falls on people,
While they slumber in their beds,
¹⁶Then ^(Q)He opens the ears of people,
And horrifies them with warnings,
¹⁷So that He may turn a person away from bad conduct,
And ^[g]keep a man from pride;
¹⁸He ^(R)keeps his soul back from the pit,
And his life from perishing by the ^(S)spear.

¹⁹“A person is also rebuked by ^(T)pain in his bed,
And with constant complaint in his bones,
²⁰So that his life ^(U)loathes bread,
And his soul, food ^[h]that he should crave.
²¹His ^(V)flesh wastes away from sight,
And his ^(W)bones, which were not seen, stick out.
²²Then ^(X)his soul comes near to the pit,
And his life to those who bring death.

²³“If there is an ^(Y)interceding angel for him,
One out of a thousand,
To remind a person of what is ^[i]right for him,
²⁴And he is gracious to him, and says,
‘Free him from ^(Z)going down to the pit,
I have found a ^(AA)ransom’;
²⁵Let his flesh become fresher than in youth,
Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor;
²⁶Then he will ^(AB)pray to God, and He will accept him,
So that ^(AC)he may see His face with joy,
And He will restore His righteousness to that person.
²⁷He will sing to people and say,
‘I ^(AD)have sinned and perverted what is right,
And it is not ^(AE)proper for me.
²⁸He has redeemed my soul from going to the pit,
And my life will ^(AF)see the light.’

²⁹“Behold, God does ^(AG)all these things for a man two or three times,
³⁰To ^(AH)bring back his soul from the pit,
So that he may be enlightened with the light of life.
³¹Pay attention, Job, listen to me;
Keep silent, and let me speak.
³²Then if ^[j]you have anything to say, answer me;
Speak, for I would take pleasure in justifying you.
³³If not, ^(AI)listen to me;
Keep silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”

Death and Resurrection Foretold

³⁰^(A)And from there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it. ³¹For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “^(B)The Son of Man is to be ^[a]handed over to men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.” ³²But ^(C)they ^[b]did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.

³³^(D)They came to Capernaum; and when He was in ^(E)the house, He began to question them: “What were you discussing on the way?” ³⁴But they kept silent, for on the way ^(F)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. ³⁵And sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, “^(G)If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” ³⁶And He took a child and placed him among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, ³⁷“^(H)Whoever ^[c]receives ^[d]one child like this in My name ^[e]receives Me; and whoever ^[f]receives Me does not ^[g]receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”

Dire Warnings

³⁸^(I)John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and ^(J)we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” ³⁹But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. ⁴⁰^(K)For the one who is not against us is ^[h]for us. ⁴¹For ^(L)whoever gives you a cup of water to drink ^[i]because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.

⁴²“^(M)Whoever causes one of these ^[j]little ones who believe in Me to ^[k]sin, it is better for him if a heavy millstone is hung around his neck and he ^[l]is thrown into the sea. ⁴³And ^(N)if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than, having your two hands, to go into ^[m]^(O)hell, into the ^(P)unquenchable fire.^[n] ⁴⁵And if your foot is causing you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life without a foot, than, having your two feet, to be thrown into ^[o]^(Q)hell.^[p] ⁴⁷And ^(R)if your eye is causing you to sin, throw it away; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be thrown into ^[q]^(S)hell, ⁴⁸^(T)where their worm does not die, and ^(U)the fire is not extinguished. ⁴⁹For everyone will be salted with fire. ⁵⁰Salt is good; but ^(V)if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you ^[r]make it salty again? ^(W)Have salt in yourselves, and ^(X)be at peace with one another.”
